Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. Princess Leia in Star Wars. Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz. Alice in Closer. What do these characters have in common?
Their iconic hairdos. That’s what makes these characters so visually stunning and memorable!
Harley Quinn wouldn’t have been the iconic character if not for her wild blue and red pigtails. And you cannot pull off Princess Leia without her iconic buns!
Halloween is all about transformation and creating a look that can be pleasantly shocking. It’s the one night of the year when you can go ‘lady gaga,’ and no one would bat an eyelid of judgment.
So why not go all out and experiment not only with costumes but with your hair too? You don’t have to go cray-cray by changing your real hair! What are wigs for, anyway?
If you’re buying a wig just for Halloween, we’re sure you don’t want to spend a fortune. But, cheap wigs look their price and often look so plastic-y that you’d not want to wear them. Don’t worry!
We have a few tips to make Halloween wigs look perfect on you to rock your carefully planned costume!
-
Skip the Costume Stores
Most people hit the costume stores to shop for cosplay wigs. We suggest you skip them and buy from a specialized wig and hair shop, especially if you’re looking for a good quality synthetic wig.
A quality wig is always more comfortable to wear, won’t itch, and requires less maintenance. While you are picking out your wig, you should also buy a Styrofoam head form so that it can have a proper place to sit. Wigs lose their shape over time or if mishandled.
-
Securing The Wig Properly
Super important! If the wig doesn’t fit your head correctly or isn’t secured, it looks fake and uncomfortable. If you have long hair, it becomes slightly tricky to secure them under the wig.
Part your hair down the middle. You can either braid or twist your hair and pin it over your head to give a Heidi-like look. Make sure it looks flat. You can further secure it by using bobby pins, and for better effect, use a fishnet wig cap.
To make it look more natural, you should leave out your natural baby hair along the edges. You can opt for lace front wigs since they create a natural hairline and are very secure.
-
Style It To Give It Some Character
Wigs don’t have a great cut, even if they are straight off the box. You will have to style your wig, trim, or cut it too, for it to look flattering on you. Sometimes, wigs are cut bluntly, or cut too straight, making them look unrealistic.
You can take it to a professional stylist or cut it on your own. That will give it some movement and character.
-
Experiment With Colors
If the shop you are buying from doesn’t have wigs in the color you want, you can always pick a blonde or a white one and color it DIY. Dyed wigs are super attractive and help cut down the unnatural shine.
You can use fabric dyes or even acrylic paints. Mix either with water in a bowl. You can color the wig using a brush or dip it in the bowl and let it sit for 30 minutes. Wash it once it’s dry and voila! You now have the perfectly colored wig that’ll grab eyeballs at your Halloween party!
-
Cut the Shine To Make It Look Real
Most wigs look unnatural because of the plastic-y shine that natural human hair doesn’t have. But it’s very easy to matte your hair or cut down on the shine.
Just sprinkle some baby powder and run your fingers through your hair. An alternative is to use a dry shampoo or a root touch-up spray. Just spray a little and brush it down.
-
Add Volume To Your Wig
If your wig isn’t fresh out of the box and is a little lifeless, you’d want to add some volume to it. Or, even if it’s new, who doesn’t want to add a little drama?
It’s simple; tease your hair at the base. That’ll give it a little lift, and add some hair spray for the effect to stay longer. You can even stack two wigs, one on top of another, to double the volume. Don’t forget to use bobby pins!
-
Pluck Out Hair Along the Parting
Wigs have perfect parting that looks weird and unnatural. To make it seem like your own hair, widen the space by tweezing or plucking out hair from the parting. Try to do it randomly, after placing it on the styrofoam head to avoid ripping out the lace.
-
Use Water to Style Your Hair
If you have a human hair wig, you can use heat to style your hair. But, if you are using a synthetic wig, using hot appliances is a big NO. Water is one of the best ways to style synthetic wigs.
If you want to straighten wig hair, pour boiling water over it and comb it through and let it dry. You can repeat it until you’ve achieved the desired straightness.
To curl them, use foam curls. Once you’ve attached them to the curlers, place the wig in boiling water for about three to ten seconds. Let the wig dry and fluff it to get gorgeous beach waves. You can also use velcro rollers and use a blowdryer on a low setting to curl the wig hair.
If you don’t like wigs that demand a lot of maintenance, you can always opt for braided wigs. They are easy to wear and don’t need a lot of styling.
Caring for your wig and all of the above is essential. But to make the most of your Halloween, you need to have a lot of fun! It’s the day to be experimental. Forget your everyday self. Be someone different, and unleash your wild side!
Be comfortable in being weird this Halloween! We promise, you’ll love it!
