3 Way to Wear a Wig
by Temitope Ikudaisi
The wig industry has made it easier for us today to have an endless selection of hairstyles, it’s never been easier to have your dream hair! A wig change can help improve our mood and reflect our personality. It also serves as a huge time saver - you can say goodbye to timely routines with just slip of your wig!
Just because it’s not your hair, doesn’t mean you can’t put your own spin on it with styling. Both synthetic and human hair can take heat, dying, and styling, it all depends on the look you are going for. Instead of ruining your own natural hair with bleaching or teasing, torture your wig – experiment with all the latest boldest styles.
The actual styling process is a little different than styling your natural hair. But not to worry, we will be walking through the basics of parting and bunning your wig.
We are starting with a long, straight wig that can be styled in three different ways:
1 The Middle Part
Wigs are meant to help us to complement our look. The middle part wig allows you to showcase your beauty and gives you confidence and an elegant look. This look is suitable for corporate and for casual outings.
To obtain this desired look, you need to section your straight, long hair be it human-hair or synthetic wig into two parts, starting from the front. Use a wig brush and/or combs instead of a regular one designed for natural hair. These brushes are designed to work with wigs, and are preferred for reviving the fibers. Carefully brush the wig hair, starting at the ends and working your way to the roots to remove any entanglement in the wig.
For a long time, the center part was only considered flattering on a few face shapes. In recent years the beauty community has expanded its thinking, and we are glad, any face shape can sample this look, so take on the middle part!
2 The Side Part
The side part is a classic for people with all face shapes. You can choose the part you want, be it to the left or to the right side of your face, and it will still look good on you. You can blow up one side of the hair to give it volume while you tuck in the other side behind your ears. It usually highlights your best features like your eyes and cheekbones.
3 The Bun
We have all wanted to do a big bun style but haven’t had the length to pull it off. Luckily, your favorite lace style can take that look on. If your wig has lace all around the edge (aka 360 lace), then a high bun will look seamless. If your wig has a lace front, that wear a lower bun to avoid the hair looking unblended.
The bun style is super adorable and not complicated at all. First secure your wig to a styling head, use pins for a secure base to work with. For this style, you will need to brush all the hair upwards and hold them together with an elastic hairband to give you the desired bun you want. It can either be a loose or tight bun based on how you want the look. Spritz your wig with a little hair oil or hairspray for extra shine and hold. Then use the back of a comb to smooth away and stray hairs. You might need some bobby pins to help with fixing the bun in place.
With this little information above, you have a new look! Just a little help can go a long way to starting your wig journey. A single wig always has more to offer than one look. Not all of us turn to wigs for more styling opportunities, sometimes you just want to literally shake and go; but for those of us that love to play with fashion wig styling is a lot of fun.
